Doug Smith

1938 - 2009

Doug was one of our longest serving band members.  He joined the band in 1956 and remained a member until his very sad death on Wednesday 18th February 2009.

The band were honoured to play the music at his funeral - something Doug would have wanted.  It is fair to say that the band was Doug's family.

Doug was one of the band's  "mainstays" - as well as playing tenor horn, he was the band's treasurer.  For numerous years he managed the band uniforms and controlled the issue and general maintenance of the instruments.  When the band performed at an engagement, it was Doug that brought the banners, spare uniform jackets, the stands, the music .......  you name it - Doug did it.

Doug will be remembered for his dry humour, and totally "unflappable" nature.  When all around him folks were getting excited and panicking - Doug remained totally calm and collected.  Doug was a true bandsman in every sense of the word.

Shortly before Christmas last year (2008), Doug announced that he wished to purchase a full set of uniforms for the band.  This was duly carried out, and it is pleasing to remember that Doug wore his new uniform at a concert, and saw the band in their new uniforms before his death.

Words really cannot describe how much Doug will be missed.

 Thank You Doug.
